Suspected members of a cult group have continued to wreak havoc on the Shomolu community in Lagos State. Three persons reportedly lost their lives, while many were injured in a fresh attack by the group.
It was said the group overran the community between 7.30pm and 8.00pm last Thursday, a few hours after the shot a prominent member of Somolu community, Olatunde Vincent.
PUNCH Metro had on October 4, 2013, reported that Vincent was shot along with a yet-to-be identified man on Craig Street last Thursday on the suspicion that he was a police informant.
The suspected cultists were believed to be members of the EFCC boys, a gang reportedly led by Rasaki Oseni aka Elewure, who was recently arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for murder, vandalism and theft.
PUNCH Metro, however, learnt that one Azeez Adedoyin is said to have been arrested in connection with the attack.
A source, who pleaded anonymity, said the suspected cultists fled to Fadeyi to regroup after shooting Vincent.
He said, “After they had regrouped at Fadeyi, at about 7.30pm, these same people came back to Somolu. They first went to Ajose Street and after that, came back to Popoola.
“They had actually come to attack Vincent who at the time was receiving treatment at the Shomolu General Hospital at Oreofero Street. When they were repelled by some members of the community who were keeping watch at the hospital, the cultists went on a shooting spree, moving round the community.”
PUNCH Metro gathered that three yet-to be-identified persons were killed in the attack; one of them was said to a teenager who had been sent on an errand by his parents.
The source said, “We learned that one of the victims was a brother to another cultist. He was killed by a stray bullet at Kajola Street. The teenager was killed at Popoola Street, while another person died elsewhere. Some persons were wounded at Adedoyin Street, but they are now responding to treatment in the hospital.
“The shooting spree lasted for about 30 minutes and while they were terrorising the community, there was no help from the police despite several distress calls to the Alade Police Division.
“At Kajola, where the brother of a cultist was killed, there was a police checkpoint there. Surprisingly, they were nowhere to be found when the cultists on rampaging went through the area.
“Presently, we are aware that the cultists are camped at the canal which separates Somolu from Bariga. Some of them are also hiding out in the shanties at Ponraele.”
Although Somolu is said to be reportedly calm after last Thursday’s attack, residents are said to be living in fear. Some of the suspected cultists are persons allegedly known to the Somolu community as their families are said to live there.
He added, “Eyin bouncing, Osanle, Yesiru, T-boy and Olumide were part of the people that attacked us that night. These persons have been terrorising the community for years.”
The Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Mr. Damasus Ozoani, promised to call back, which he did not as of going to the press.
